IPCI Alum becomes Spanish Minister
MADRID, 07 June – Hon. Carmen Montón, former Spanish APPG Chair and participant at IPCI/ICPD 2012 in Istanbul, is now Spanish Minister of Health.
This bodes very well for the future of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Spain. Member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Montón is now the Spanish Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare. Her activity in the Spanish Parliament in her first year was centred on legislative preparation for laws legalising same-sex marriage. She has also led efforts to reduce domestic violence, including the development of a helpline to give guidance to males of a violent disposition, and for new laws to allow pregnant deputies to cast votes from outside the Spanish Parliament. Let’s hope for an even more positive approach to SRHR in Spain from now on!
